The EuroLeague considers the creation of a new competition in the old continent, something that the NBA and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) are exploring, to be a 'threat' to the traditions of European basketball. In their opinion, this could generate a risk of 'fragmentation and confusion' in the sport.

This was stated in a press release by the EuroLeague after its board of directors met on Monday in Barcelona to discuss key issues regarding the future of its competitions. One of the main issues that has marked the current state of European basketball in recent weeks is the NBA's announcement to explore the creation of a league in Europe with FIBA as a partner.

Although the EuroLeague does not directly mention either the NBA or FIBA in its statement, it does refer to 'the announced proposals for the creation of a new European league,' which it qualifies as a 'threat to the traditions of European basketball.' While the board members expressed openness to 'dialogue' with any party that is 'genuinely interested in contributing to the continued growth of European basketball,' they opposed 'any initiative that undermines the core values, heritage, and fan base of European sports, and that risks leaving loyal fans behind.'

'The Board reaffirmed its commitment to continue on the successful path it has built over the last 25 years. This progress has been based on unity and determination, values that remain as strong today as they were at the beginning,' the statement adds.

It also reminds that EuroLeague and EuroCup clubs have invested 'significant resources' in recent years to 'provide the best experience' to fans, reaching 'record levels of interest and commercial success.
